The Dolley Madison First Spouse Gold Coin was the fourth release of the series honoring the President’s spouses. The coins were released on November 19, 2007. This marked the final release of the series for the year 2007.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Dolley Madison. She served as First Lady from 1809 to 1817 during the Presidency of her husband James Madison. The obverse inscriptions include “Dolley Madison”, “In God We Trust”, “Liberty”, the order of the Presidency “4th”, the dates of the Presidential term “1809-1817″, and the date and mint mark “2007 W”. The obverse was designed and sculpted by Don Everhart.
The reverse of the coin features Dolley Madison during her most remembered action as First Lady. She saved the cabinet papers and a Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington just before approaching British troops set the White House on fire. This famous act took place on August 1814. The reverse inscriptions include “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, the denomination “$10″, the gold content “1/2 oz.”, and the purity “.9999 Fine Gold”. The reverse of the coin was designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Don Everhart.
Dolley Madison Liberty First Spouse Coins were offered in both proof and uncirculated finishes with a limit of 20,000 coins per option. The proof version was initially priced at $529.95 and the uncirculated version was priced at $509.95.
The coins were offered for sale at the US Mint for approximately one year. The last sales figures available from the United States Mint indicate combined sales of 30,896 coins. This was comprised of 12,541 of the uncirculated version and 18,355 of the proof version.
