The Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin was the third release of the series created to honor the President’s spouses. The coins were released on August 30, 2007.
The obverse of the coin bears the image of Liberty originally used on the Draped Bust Half Cent coin. This image was used since Thomas Jefferson did not have a spouse while serving as President. The Draped Bust Half Cent was produced between 1800 and 1808, which included Jefferson’s term. The obverse inscriptions include “Liberty”, “In God We Trust ~ 2007″, “3rd Presidency”, the dates of the Presidential term “1801-1809″, and the mint mark “W”. The obverse was originally designed by Robert Scot and re-sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.
The reverse of the coin features an image of Thomas Jefferson’s monument. The inscription from the monument is reproduced on the coin. It reads, “Here was buried Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, of the statute of Virginia for religious freedom and the father of the University of Virginia. Born April 2, 1743, O.S. Died July 4, 1826.” This monument is located on the grounds of his estate Monticello. Additional reverse inscriptions include “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, the denomination “$10″, the gold content “1/2 oz.”, and the purity “.9999 Fine Gold”. The reverse was designed and sculpted by Charles Vickers.
Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty First Spouse Coins were offered in both proof and uncirculated finishes. The proof version was initially priced at $429.95 and the uncirculated version was priced at $410.95. Ahead of high anticipated demand, the United States Mint placed an ordering limit on the product of one per option per household.
The coins had a mintage of 40,000 coins. As with the prior two issues of the series, this entire amount was sold on the first day of sales. The mintage was split evenly between the proof and uncirculated versions which were offered.
