Andrew Jackson’s Liberty First Spouse Gold Coin was the third release of 2008 for the 24 karat gold coin series. It represented the seventh release in the series overall. Coins were available for purchase from the United States Mint beginning on August 28, 2008.
The obverse of the coin bears the image of Liberty originally used on the Capped Bust, Lettered Edge Half Dollar. In accordance with the authorizing legislation for the series, an image of Liberty was used since Andrew Jackson did not have a spouse while serving as President. The Capped Bust Lettered Edge Half Dollar was produced between 1807 and 1836, which included Jackson’s term. The obverse inscriptions include “Liberty”, “In God We Trust”, “7th Presidency”, the dates of the Presidential term “1829-1837″, the year of mintage “2008″, and the mint mark “W”. The obverse was originally designed by John Reich.
The reverse of the coin features an image of Andrew Jackson the war hero, nicknamed “Old Hickory.” He appears in uniform, mounted on a horse. The reverse inscriptions include “Old Hickory”, “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, the denomination “$10″, the gold content “1/2 oz.”, and the purity “.9999 Fine Gold”. The reverse was designed by Justin Kunz and sculpted by Don Everhart.
Andrew Jackson’s Liberty First Spouse Coins were available in both proof and unciruclated finishes. The proof version was initially offered at $619.95, and the uncirculated version was offered at $599.95. Prices were subsequently adjusted in response to fluctuations in the price of gold after the US Mint adopted an alternate pricing policy.
A maximum mintage of 40,000 coins was set across both product options. The proof version was available until August 17, 2009 and the uncirculated version was available until September 3, 2009. The last reported sales figures from the US Mint indicate 7,806 proof coins sold and 4,754 uncirculated coins sold.
