The Louisa Adams First Spouse Gold Coin was released on May 29, 2008. This marked the second release of 2008 for the series honoring the President’s spouses, and the sixth release for the series overall.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Louisa Adams. She served as First Lady from 1825 to 1829 during the Presidency of her husband John Quincy Adams. The obverse inscriptions include “Louisa Adams”, “In God We Trust”, “Liberty”, the order of the Presidency “6th”, the dates of the Presidential term “1825-1829″, and the date and mint mark “2008 W”. The obverse was designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.
The reverse of the coin features a scene of Louisa Adams and her young son Charles making a journey across Europe. They were seeking to rejoin husband and father John Quincy Adams in Paris. The reverse inscriptions include “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, the denomination “$10″, the gold content “1/2 oz.”, and the gold purity “.9999 Fine Gold”. The reverse of the coin was designed by Donna Weaver and sculpted by Charles Vickers.
Louisa Adams First Spouse Coins were offered in both proof and uncirculated finishes. The proof version was initially priced at $619.95 and the uncirculated version was priced at $599.95. A maximum mintage of 40,000 coins was set across both options.
The coins remained available until July 2, 2009 when sales were ended to coincide with the release of the second First Spouse coin for 2009. The United States Mint reported combined sales of 11,677 for the Louisa Adams First Spouse Gold Coin. This was comprised of 7,454 proof coins and 4,223 uncirculated coins.
