The Julia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coin represented the eleventh release for the 24 karat gold coin series and the third of five releases for 2009. The coins went on sale at the United States Mint on August 6, 2009.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Julia Tyler. She was the First Lady from 1844 to 1845 during the Presidency of her husband John Tyler. She was his second wife, following the death of his first wife Letitia Tyler. The obverse inscriptions include “Julia Tyler”, “In God We Trust”, “Liberty”, the order of the Presidency “10th”, the years she served as First Lady “1844-1845″, and the date and mint mark “2009 W”. The obverse was designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Don Everhart.
The coin’s reverse features Julia Tyler dancing with her husband John Tyler at a White House Ball. She had introduced the polka at a White House event, causing the dance to have widespread national popularity. The reverse inscriptions include, “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, the denomination “$10″, the gold content “1/2 oz.”, and the gold purity “.9999 Fine Gold”. The reverse of the coin was designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Don Everhart.
Julia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coins were offered in both proof and uncirculated finishes. A maximum mintage of 40,000 coins was set across both options. The coins were initially priced at $629.00 and $616.00 for proof and uncirculated coins, respectively. These prices were subsequently adjusted on several occasions in response to the changing price of gold.
US Mint sales for the coins ended on June 3, 2010, about ten months after the initial start of sales. The last reported sales figures indicate 4,830 proof and 2,861 uncirculated coins sold.
