The Letitia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coin represented the tenth overall release of the series and the second of five coins to be released during the year. Coins went on sale at the United States Mint beginning on July 2, 2009.
The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Letitia Tyler. She was the First Lady from 1841 to 1842 during the Presidency of her husband John Tyler. She passed away while he was in office. The obverse inscriptions include “Letitia Tyler”, “In God We Trust”, “Liberty”, the order of the Presidency “10th”, the years she served as First Lady “1841-1842″, and the date and mint mark “2009 W”. The obverse was designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.
The reverse of the coin features Letitia Tyler with two of her children on Cedar Grove Plantation. She successfully ran the 1,200 acre plantation, allowing her husband to focus on his political career. The reverse inscriptions include “Cedar Grove Plantation”, “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, the denomination “$10″, the gold content “1/2 oz.”, and the gold purity “.9999 Fine Gold”. The reverse of the coin was designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Norman E. Nemeth.
Letitia Tyler First Spouse Gold Coins were offered in both proof and uncirculated finishes with a maximum mintage of 40,000 coins across both options. The coins were initially priced at $629.00 and $614.00 for the proof and uncircualted versions, respectively. Prices were subsequently adjusted on numerous occasions in response to changes in the price of gold.
As of November 2009, the United States Mint has sold 4,341 of the proof version of the coin and 2,381 of the uncirculated version. The coins are expected to remain on sale for approximately one year from the initial date of offering.
