The Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold Coin was the thirteenth release for the overall series and the fifth and final release of the series for the year 2009. Coins went on sale at the United States Mint on December 3, 2009.
The obverse features a portrait of Margaret Taylor. She served as the First Lady during the Presidency of her husband Zachary Taylor from 1849 to 1850 . The obverse inscriptions include “Margaret Taylor”, “In God We Trust”, “Liberty”, the order of the Presidency “12th”, the years of the Presidential term “1849-1850″, and the date and mint mark “2009 W”. The obverse was designed by Phebe Hemphill and sculpted by Charles Vickers.
The reverse of the coin depicts Margaret Taylor caring for a wounded soldier. She is known for having nursed wounded soldiers and counseled soldier’s wives during the Seminole War. The coin’s reverse inscriptions include “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, the denomination “$10″, the gold content “1/2 oz.”, and the gold purity “.9999 Fine Gold”. The reverse of the coin was designed by Mary Beth Zeitz and sculpted by Jim Licaretz.
Margaret Taylor First Spouse Gold Coins were offered in both proof and uncirculated finishes. An overall mintage limit of 40,000 coins was set for the offering. The coins were initially priced at $754 for the proof version and $741 for the uncircualted version. These prices are subject to weekly adjustment based on the average price of gold.
As of May 2010, the United States Mint had recorded combined sales of 6,084 coins, comprised of 3,813 proof coins and 2,271 uncirculated coins.
